October 2023 is ADHD Awareness month, where ADHD organisations across the world join together in solidarity to raise awareness of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This year, the theme of ADHD Awareness Month is Moving Forward With ADHD. This theme echoes a sentiment that is very close to our hearts at Beyond. We believe that assessing and diagnosing ADHD is just the start of the journey: the most important part is about giving you a clear path forward. This is why our psychiatrists are always keen to advise on adjustments for school, work, and university to help our patients to excel whatever their stage of life.
So what exactly is ADHD Awareness Month?
ADHD Awareness Month is celebrated in October each year. This month allows people to come together and talk about ADHD, their experiences, and their challenges, and is an opportunity to understand the commonalities that the ADHD community faces.
Why is there an ADHD Awareness Month?
Itâs estimated that one in forty adults have ADHD. The aim of ADHD Awareness month is to increase support and understanding around ADHD, as well as improving access to services.Â
The month serves as a time to celebrate the difference found in neurodiversity while also advocating for new perspectives and better support systems. Unfortunately, struggling to obtain a diagnosis for ADHD in the UK is still a common problem. Many adults and children face long waiting times to see an ADHD specialist for an assessment, and even then they may be given an inaccurate diagnosis. Over the past year there has been some progress, however much more needs to be done as still many people - especially in young girls because sometimes ADHD goes unrecognised due to their tendency to mask their ADHD symptoms.
How to get an ADHD diagnosis
Evidence suggests that obtaining a diagnosis and receiving treatment for ADHD is a major factor in living a happier, healthier life. Luckily, there are now ADHD clinics such as Beyond, where specialist psychiatrists can help you obtain an in depth ADHD assessment and diagnosis quickly to help you to understand and manage your ADHD effectively.
