ADHD in Men

ADHD affects people of all genders, and it is often underdiagnosed in men. ADHD can manifest differently in adult men than it does in women or children, and its symptoms may vary among individuals. In adult men, ADHD symptoms are often more subtle and can be mistaken for other issues or simply attributed to personality traits.

Symptoms of ADHD in Men

ADHD can cause different symptoms in females than in males.

Adults and girls are more likely to be diagnosed with Inattentive type ADHD than boys, who are more likely to be diagnosed with Hyperactive/Impulsive Type.

ADHD symptoms in men may differ from those in women and can vary widely. It's important to note that not all men with ADHD will exhibit all of these symptoms, and the severity can vary.

Inattention

Adult men with ADHD may struggle to focus and maintain attention, particularly on tasks that are not personally engaging or interesting to them. They may frequently make careless mistakes at work, have difficulty organising tasks, and struggle with time management.

Hyperactivity and Impulsivity

While hyperactivity often decreases in adulthood, some men with ADHD may still exhibit restlessness, impulsivity, and difficulty remaining seated for extended periods. Men with ADHD may act on impulses, interrupt others in conversations, or have difficulty waiting their turn in situations.

Forgetfulness and Disorganisation

Adult men with ADHD may have a poor memory, be forgetful, and struggle to keep track of appointments, deadlines, or personal belongings. They may frequently lose items, such as keys or wallets.

Difficulty with follow-through

Men with ADHD may have difficulty following through on tasks, whether they are work-related, household chores, or personal commitments. They may start projects with enthusiasm but struggle to complete them.

Distraction and Inattention

Individuals with ADHD may struggle to maintain focus on tasks, leading to frequent distractions and difficulty completing projects.

Time Management Challenges

Problems with time management and punctuality are common. Men with ADHD may often underestimate the time required for tasks and find it challenging to plan their schedules effectively.

Impaired Relationships

Adult men with ADHD may have difficulties in their personal and professional relationships due to impulsivity, forgetfulness, or difficulty listening to others. They may struggle to maintain long-term relationships.

Emotional Regulation

Some men with ADHD may experience mood swings, irritability, and difficulties regulating their emotions. They may have a low tolerance for frustration and struggle to manage stress.

Substance Abuse

Adult men with ADHD may be at a higher risk of developing substance abuse issues as a way to self-medicate and manage their symptoms.

The impact of ADHD on men's lives

ADHD in men presents its own unique set of challenges and manifestations, which can have a significant impact on various aspects of their lives.

ADHD can have a significant impact on a man's professional life. They may have difficulty staying organised, meeting deadlines, and completing tasks efficiently. This can lead to underachievement, job dissatisfaction, and a higher likelihood of job changes or unemployment. On the flip side, some men with ADHD thrive in dynamic, high-pressure jobs that require quick thinking and problem-solving.

ADHD can also affect personal relationships. Men with ADHD may struggle with listening attentively, forget appointments, and appear disinterested in conversations. These behaviours can be misinterpreted as insensitivity or lack of care, straining relationships with family and friends.

Men with ADHD may also be at an increased risk of developing co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and even antisocial behaviour. These conditions can further complicate their lives.

Diagnosing & treating ADHD in Men

Several factors contribute to the underdiagnosis of ADHD in men.

Society often expects men to be more stoic and self-reliant, which can lead to the masking of symptoms. Additionally, some men may develop coping strategies to hide their difficulties, making it harder to recognise ADHD. These strategies, while adaptive in the short term, can lead to burnout and mental health issues in the long run.

At Beyond, we understand how ADHD can affect men’s lives. Our multidisciplinary team of professional ADHD psychiatrists, nurse specialists, and support staff are experienced in working with men with ADHD and helping them to live happier, healthier lives.

Why Beyond?

Why we're different

You can access our services online or in person.

You can choose to be assessed remotely, or in person at our clinic at our premises in Warrington. Our virtual service means that anyone can access care at a time that suits them, from the comfort of their own homes. Plus, you will receive the same exceptional standard of care as you would if you visited us at one of our clinics, including access to the same expert clinical team.

We’ve walked in your shoes.

Beyond Clinics was founded by a team of people who have been diagnosed with ADHD. We know exactly the kind of service and support we wish we had received. So now, it’s our turn to provide the service that we believe everyone deserves. With us, it’s not just about the diagnosis; it’s about giving you a clear path forward. We don’t just diagnose your ADHD, we understand it.

Our assessment process is second to none.

Through our own individual experiences, we found that the assessment process offered by the majority was lacking: it wasn't comprehensive or robust enough, and we didn't feel enough time was spent on each person. That’s why we offer services that other ADHD clinics don’t, throughout our entire process.

Full support following diagnosis.

Our psychiatrists are keen to advise on adjustments for school, work, or university to help their patients to excel whatever their stage of life. As well as regular contact from a specialist mental health nursing team, we also take away the monthly stress of locating your medication by managing your prescription and delivering it to your door before you run out.

Bespoke medication
care plan

We offer a supportive medication care plan to people where medication therapy is clinically recommended.

If this is the route for you, we will ensure you have a good understanding of medications for ADHD including possible effects and side effects.

We will initiate and titrate medication over the course of the next few months until we agree on the optimum dose of the medication which feels right for you. We will always prescribe medications based on best available evidence and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines.

We offer clinical reviews monthly to ensure we can monitor your physical and mental health as well as reviewing your response to medication.

We use objective outcome measures to gain a greater understanding of symptom control over time. This helps guide our decisions about what medication and what dose suits you better. Our main focus however is to be guided by your experiences. We will listen to your experiences and deliver a medication care plan to suit your needs.

Once optimised and stabilised on medication we can either request that your GP take over prescribing with a shared care agreement, or you can continue to access prescriptions from Beyond Clinics. Whichever option you choose, you will receive annual clinical reviews to ensure your medication remains effective and your health is not negatively impacted.
